Melamine Formaldehyde Dispersant (SMF)

Updated Oct 5, 2026

Sulfonated melamine formaldehyde (SMF) is an anionic polymeric dispersant produced by the polycondensation of melamine and formaldehyde, followed by sulfonation. It is used as a deflocculant and dispersant, notably in construction and textile applications where its colorless character is valued.

How SMF disperses particles

In aqueous mixtures such as cement paste or dye baths, fine particles can agglomerate due to natural attractive forces, trapping water and increasing viscosity. SMF’s sulfonate groups adsorb onto particle surfaces and impart a negative charge, creating electrostatic repulsion that helps keep particles dispersed and releases trapped water, improving flow and workability.

Typical applications

  • Construction: SMF is used as a high-range water-reducing admixture (superplasticizer) in concrete. Because it does not impart the brown or yellow tint associated with lignosulfonate- or naphthalene-based dispersants, it is commonly chosen for white cement, decorative concrete, and other applications where color is a concern.
  • Textiles: SMF is used as a dispersing and leveling agent for dyes in textile dyeing processes, helping keep dye particles dispersed under dye-bath conditions.
  • Laminates and coatings: Melamine formaldehyde resin chemistry is also used in laminates and coatings for its hardness and thermal resistance properties.

Actual performance — including water reduction, strength development, dye-leveling behavior, and fiber compatibility — depends heavily on the specific grade, dosage, and the formulation or mix design it is used in. Performance should be verified through trials with the specific application rather than assumed from generic figures.

Handling and safety

Because SMF is synthesized using formaldehyde, trace free formaldehyde can be present depending on the manufacturing process and grade. Request the current Safety Data Sheet (SDS) for the specific grade being considered, follow its handling and ventilation guidance, and confirm regulatory compliance (such as applicable formaldehyde-emission limits) for your destination market before use.
