Sodium Dibutyl Naphthalene Sulfonate Wetting Agent

Sodium dibutyl naphthalene sulfonate is an anionic surfactant used primarily for rapid wetting, penetration and related surface-control functions in aqueous industrial formulations. Commercial products may be supplied at different active concentrations and can represent isomeric or compositional mixtures. Buyers should confirm the exact chemical identity, CAS information and guaranteed specification from the current supplier SDS and TDS rather than relying on a generic molecular formula.

Primary formulation functions

  • Wetting: promotes faster displacement of air at solid–liquid interfaces and improves liquid contact with fibers, powders or substrates.
  • Penetration: supports liquid movement into porous or compact materials where rapid wet-out is required.
  • Emulsification support: may assist stabilization in compatible systems, subject to oil phase, electrolyte level and co-surfactants.
  • Dispersion support: can assist initial powder wetting, but should not automatically be treated as a substitute for a dedicated polymeric dispersant.

Typical application areas

Textile preparation and dyeing

The product may be evaluated as a wetting or penetrating component in scouring, bleaching, dyeing and other textile baths. Fabric type, bath pH, temperature, electrolyte, foam tolerance and interaction with dyes or auxiliaries determine suitability.

Agrochemical formulation

Selected grades may be screened as wetting components in wettable powders, water-dispersible granules or other formulation types. Compatibility with the active ingredient, carrier, dispersant, antifoam, water hardness and packaging must be tested. Use in a pesticide formulation is subject to the registration and inert-ingredient requirements of the destination market.

Industrial cleaning and process formulations

Rapid wetting can be useful in compatible alkaline or neutral cleaning systems and industrial process baths. Cleaning performance cannot be inferred from surface tension alone; soil type, builder system, temperature, contact time, rinsing and material compatibility should be evaluated.

What to specify when requesting a grade

ItemWhy it matters
Active matter and test methodAllows valid comparison between liquid, paste, powder or concentrated grades
Appearance and physical formAffects pumping, dosing, dissolution and handling
pH and measurement conditionsSupports formulation compatibility and incoming inspection
Water content or solidsRequired for active-basis dosage and transport comparison
Wetting testShould reflect the relevant substrate, concentration, water quality and temperature
Foam profileMust match equipment, agitation, filling and application requirements
Electrolyte and hard-water behaviorShould be measured in the buyer’s actual formulation rather than assumed
Residuals and regulatory documentationImportant for the application and destination market

Numerical limits should be taken from the current product TDS and confirmed on the lot COA. A value reported without its concentration, basis and test method is not sufficient for purchasing control.

Recommended formulation screening

  1. Establish a control formula and define the required wetting time, dispersion, foam and storage targets.
  2. Screen the supplier-recommended trial range on an active-matter basis.
  3. Test with the actual water hardness, electrolyte, pH, temperature and co-formulants.
  4. Measure wetting or penetration using a method relevant to the substrate, not only a generic surface-tension value.
  5. Evaluate foam during mixing and application, then conduct accelerated and ambient storage testing.
  6. Confirm packaging compatibility and scale-up behavior before commercial adoption.

Relationship to NNO, MF and other dispersants

Sodium dibutyl naphthalene sulfonate is generally selected for wetting and penetration. Dispersant NNO and Dispersant MF are evaluated for different dispersion requirements. The products are not interchangeable solely because they contain naphthalene sulfonate functionality; selection should be based on the formulation target and comparative tests.

Safety, handling and documentation

Use the current SDS for classification, personal protective equipment, first aid, storage, spill control and transport information. Avoid assigning a universal hazard status, biodegradability claim or toxicological value to every commercial grade. Do not discharge product or formulation waste to waterways; follow applicable site and regulatory requirements.
